Romanian MPs express support for Georgia's EU accession

Romanian members of the Parliament on Wednesday expressed their support for Georgia's accession to the European Union and pledged to “actively” support the country in the process in their meeting with a Georgian Parliamentary delegation headed by Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the Parliament’s EU Integration Committee.
On their visit to Bucharest, the Georgian MPs met representatives of the Romanian legislative and executive authorities, the Parliament’s press office said.
The meeting with the host MPs focused on the progress and expectations of Georgia at its EU integration path.
The sides also discussed sharing Romania’s experience in its accession to the bloc, as well as the enhancement of economic ties and ensuring Black Sea regional connectivity and security.
Paweł Herczyński, the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, on Friday said Georgia’s close cooperation with the bloc was a “solid foundation” to build even closer ties between the sides.
Péter Szijjártó, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, on Thursday reaffirmed his country’s support for Georgia’s European Union integration goals at a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Ilia Darchiashvili.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Saturday discussed the country’s European integration agenda, as well as global challenges, at the meetings with his Finnish, French and Brazilian counterparts, held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
The current agenda of bilateral relations between Georgia and Romania was discussed on Saturday by the countries’ foreign ministers Ilia Darchiashvili and Bogdan Aurescu.
A Georgian delegation participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union for the first time this week.
Maka Botchorishvili, the Head of the European Integration Committee in the Georgian Parliament, on Friday said Russia’s policy in Ukraine was a continuation of the one used in Georgia, stressing this should not be forgotten in order to “cope with” the aggression threatening European security, the Parliament press office said.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, together with the delegation, will visit Romania from Sunday to Wednesday and is set to address the members of the Senate of Romania at the plenary session.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday highlighted the purpose of his ongoing visit to Romania was to gain the support of his Romanian counterparts for the European Union membership candidate status for Georgia later this year.
