Servicemembers from the Georgian Defence Forces on Wednesday honoured the memory of Archil Tatunashvili, a retired Junior Sergeant killed by the occupying forces in the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) in 2018.

The armed forces representatives visited Tatunashvili’s grave at the Mukhatgverdi cemetery of servicemembers killed in the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia on the anniversary of the late officer’s illegal arrest and killing.

They noted his heroism at the gathering and spoke to his family members, the Georgian Defence Ministry said.

On February 22, 2018, Tatunashvili was illegally detained by the occupation regime in occupied Akhalgori of the central Georgian region, with his death reported a day later, before the servicemember’s body was transferred to the Georgian-controlled territory and buried with military honours at the cemetery.

His name also used to draft the Otkhozoria-Tatunashvili List of offenders selected for sanctions for violations of human rights in the occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. The list was supported by the Council of Europe in 2019.

Tatunashvili served in the Georgian Defence Forces between 2007-2011.
