Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday commemorated an anniversary of the killing of Archil Tatunashvili, a servicemember who was murdered by Russian occupation forces in central Georgia’s occupied territory in 2018, by saying his name had “become a symbol of dignity and perseverance” for the Georgian public and future generations.

Kobakhidze was commenting on the sixth anniversary of the killing of Tatunashvili, a retired Junior Sergeant who was illegally detained along with two other Georgian citizens in the Russian-occupied Akhalgori area, allegedly for his service during the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.

Today marks six years since the killing of Archil Tatunashvili by the occupation regime. Together with our public, I will once again honour the memory of the hero of our time. The Government is doing everything to ensure that all persons responsible for the killing of Archil Tatunashvili are brought to justice”, the PM said.

The de facto authorities in the occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region announced the death of Tatunashvili the day after his capture, and cited “heart-related problems” as the cause.
