The Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, a body formed as part of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership programme, on Tuesday adopted a resolution supporting the accession of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.

The Assembly welcomed the “historic” decision taken by the European Commission last year to grant EU membership candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and emphasised that all three countries were part of the EU's enlargement policy, the Georgian Parliament’s press office said.

Adopted at a session hosted in Chișinău, the resolution called on Russia to “immediately” cease military actions in Ukraine and respect the territorial integrity of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, a condition it called “important for ensuring European security”.

Today there is a new reality in the Eastern Partnership region. Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine have the prospect of joining the European Union, and it is important to take effective steps for the accession of all three countries. That is why the Parliamentary Assembly should clearly support this process and the accession of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union”, Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, said in comments on the resolution.

The resolution also called on EU member states to give impetus to the bloc’s enlargement process and take “specific” steps in the direction.

The Euronest Parliamentary Assembly was formed in 2011 to bring members of the European Parliament together with the national parliaments of Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to facilitate closer ties between the bloc and its partner states in the region.
