NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday said the alliance would continue to “work closely” with partners like Georgia in what he called a “part of the message” of the bloc as the Russian invasion of Ukraine neared its first anniversary.

In his remarks ahead of the start of the Munich Security Conference, Stoltenberg noted NATO’s message to the Georgian people was that the war in Ukraine was part of a “pattern” heralded by Russia’s invasion of Georgia in 2008.

The message to the people of Georgia is that the war in Ukraine is part of the pattern that actually started with the invasion of Georgia. Then we have seen a brutal war in Syria. Then we saw an illegal annexation of Crimea. And then we saw a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine”, the bloc’s leader said.

“We’ll continue to work closely with the partners like Georgia and that’s part of the message now, one year after the war”, he concluded in his comments.
