Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Wednesday said Georgia’s geographical location, free trade deals and "attractive" business environment could give it the role of a “regional gateway” for Japanese companies.

The Ministry of Economy cited Davitashvili with the remark at an event marking the National Day of Japan, celebrated on the birthday of Emperor Naruhito.

Congratulating the Japanese people on the holiday, Davitashvili told the audience at the occasion his Government was committed to deepening cooperation with Japan and using "all tools" to promote economic and trade relations.

He noted trade turnover between the countries had increased by 57 percent in 2022, with the volume of investments from Japan increasing four times in the third quarter of the past year.

One of our priorities is active cooperation in the field of information technology, which is important for promoting the development of the digital corridor. There is an agreement between Georgia and Japan on the liberalisation, promotion and protection of investments, which contributes to the stimulation of entrepreneurial initiatives, the effective use of economic resources and the development of relations between the two countries", Davitashvili said.

The Minister also highlighted the Japanese Government's support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We highly appreciate the support of the Japanese Government and people towards our country [...] Japan was one of the first states to recognise Georgia's independence back in 1918, and has consistently supported Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Davitashvili said.

In closing, Davitashvili thanked the Embassy of Japan, Ambassador Akira Imamura and his staff for their "active contribution” to strengthening bilateral ties.
