The work carried out by the country’s authorities on preparing the winter resort of Bakuriani for hosting the FIS Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships affords an opportunity for Georgia to “decently” host the Championships, the Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili said on Wednesday.

Kvrivishvili noted the World Championships was a “complex event” and it was required to provide not only logistical and infrastructural works, but also security and healthcare services during the tournament, the Economy Ministry said.

This will be a great achievement and recognition for our country, bringing more tourists to Georgia", the Deputy Minister said at the final inter-departmental meeting on preparations for hosting the competition that launches on Thursday.

The implemented and planned projects were discussed at the meeting attended by the representatives of the Government and local authorities, as well as heads of the Mountain Tracks Agency, Bakuriani Development Agency and Georgian Ski Federation.

The coordinated work of all agencies during the preparatory period was praised at the meeting, which had a “positive effect” on the achieved result, and it was stressed that the infrastructure in Bakuriani would be further developed in the future.

Bakuriani will host the Championships between February 16 and March 5, with about 700 athletes from 42 countries competing in 30 categories for seven disciplines. The vacationers of the resort will also have an opportunity to ski on six new trails and ride the three new cable cars.
