2022 data: most visitors to Georgia from Russia, Turkey, Armenia

The largest number of visitors Georgia hosted last year came from Russia, followed by Turkey and Armenia, the latest inbound tourism statistics published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia on Tuesday show.

Georgia hosted 915,100 Russian visitors last year, which made up 23.3 percent of the total, with 18.1 percent from Turkey and 13.5 percent from Armenia.

In figures, visits by Russian citizens amounted to 1.1 million, with Turkish nationals making 925,600 visits, and the number standing at 742,600 for those from Armenia.

The overall number of arrivals of international travellers in Georgia equalled 5.4 million in 2022, of which the number of visits by international visitors made up 4.7 million. 

The number of arrivals of international travellers was 2.9 times higher compared to 2021, while the number of visits by international visitors was 2.7 times higher.

In other related figures, the Office said 77.6 percent of international visitors were only tourists, while the share of visitors whose trip did not include an overnight stay in the country amounted to 18.7 percent. 

The indicated purposes of a majority of visits - 53.6 percent - were holiday, leisure and recreation, with the average number of nights spent during the visit at 6.3 nights. 

The majority of visits came to capital Tbilisi  - with 2.6 million visits - and the Black Sea region of Adjara, with 2.1 million.

International travellers spent ₾10.8 billion ($4bln) last year in Georgia, with the average expenditure per visit equalling ₾2,297.7 ($865). Most of the income stemming from the visits - 45.6 percent - came on travellers of the 31-50 age group.
