The Georgian Interior Ministry’s steps for combating violence against women and gender-based violence were noted in discussions on a country report by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Ministry said on Friday.
International experts of the Committee - which consists of 23 experts on women’s rights from around the world - were briefed about “important legislative and institutional reforms” implemented at the national level during the reporting period, the body said.

Committee members heard from Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze and Niko Tatulashvili, the Human Rights Advisor to the Prime Minister, on the domestic implementation of the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
Adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, the Convention entered into force as an international treaty in 1981 and works to monitor the situation of women worldwide and promote their rights.
