Snowfall, avalanche risks lead to road closures across Georgia

Roads across Georgia have been closed or restricted for certain types of traffic following snowfall and blizzard conditions, the Roads Department said on Tuesday.

The body said the weather’s turn for the worse had also brought poor visibility and risks of avalanche.

It said traffic had been restricted on the following road sections:

  • Mleta-Gudauri and Gudauri-Kobi road sections of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi road leading from the historical capital near Tbilisi to the northern border - closed to all vehicles
  • Kilometre 30 to 50 section of the Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi road in eastern Kakheti region - access permitted only using anti-skid chains, and for vehicles with two or more tandem-drive axles
  • Kilometre 1 to 30 section of the Tianeti-Akhmeta-Kvareli-Ninigori in the Kakheti region - closed to trailers, semi-trailers and vehicles with more than 30 seats. Other types of vehicles are allowed with anti-skid chains
  • Khashuri-Akhaltsikhe-Vale international road leading to the south-western border with Turkey - closed to trailers, semi-trailers
  • Kilometre 90 to 112 section of the Akhaltsikhe-Ninotsminda on border with Armenia in the south and kilometre 1 to 36.5 section of the Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi road on border with Turkey - closed to trailers, semi-trailers and vehicles with more than 30 seats
  • Kilometre 39 to 62 section of the Kutaisi-Tkibuli-Ambrolauri road connecting the cities of Kutaisi and Ambrolauri in the west - closed to trailers and semi-trailers
  • Sachkhere-Uzunta-Shkmeri-Zudali connecting the western region of Imereti to Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti - closed to trailers and semi-trailers
  • Kilometre 1 to 52 section of the Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Zestaponi in Imereti - closed to trailers and semi-trailers
  • Kilometre 31 to 66 section of the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road connecting Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Khevsureti regions - closed to all vehicles
  • Kilometre 125 to 151 section of Kutaisi-Tskaltubo-Tsageri-Lentekhi-Lasdili road stretching from Kutaisi to Svaneti region in the north-west - closed to all vehicles; kilometre 99 to 125 section of the same road closed to trailers and semi-trailers
  • Kilometre 177 to 186 section of the Zugdidi-Jvari-Mestia-Lasdili road connecting Samegrelo and Svaneti regions - closed to all vehicles; kilometre 30 to 177 section of the same road closed to trailers, semi-trailers and vehicles with more than 30 seats; cars with anti-skid chains are allowed on the kilometre 70 to 177 section of the same road
