Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Policy, on Tuesday said Georgia and its Government “have done their job” and for that they should be granted the EU membership candidate status.

In his comments to the Imedi TV channel, Varhelyi noted the leaders of the EU member states should make “a strategic decision” about Georgia’s candidacy.

He emphasised the European Commission’s recommendations on granting the country candidate status were “clear”, stressing “Georgia has come a long way [...] We will see whether the European Council will take this into account”.

My message to the Georgian Government and the Georgian people is as follows - keep working, because this is the best recipe for success”, the Commissioner added.

Earlier in November, the European Commission recommended the European Council to grant Georgia the candidate status. The final decision on the country’s candidacy will be announced this week.
