Laurence Boone, the French Minister of State for Europe, on Tuesday said the country’s Government supported the granting of the European Union membership candidate status to Georgia, ahead of the European Council’s anticipated decision on Friday.
In her remarks over the matter, Boone noted France had expressed a “positive” opinion on the bloc’s enlargement.
“It is about the security of the continent, it is about its stability, it is also about sending a very, very strong signal to Russia that what happened in 2008 [in Georgia] or 2014 [in Crimea] will not happen again”, she said.

Since we are talking about the enlargement, we support the [European] Commission's recommendations on Ukraine and Moldova. Ukraine and Moldova have made a lot of effort and have made a lot of progress. We also support Georgia's candidate status”, the French official noted.
She added the approach was about “investing” in Europe and “securing peace” on the continent, and further pointed out the bloc “must move forward” and “send this strong signal”.
