Ruling party head highlights Hungarian Government’s support for Georgia’s European integration

Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday highlighted the Hungarian Government’s support for Georgia’s European integration.
Kobakhidze noted Budapest would “definitely” support the granting of the European Union membership candidate status to Georgia as its “firm stance”.
“They have a different position regarding Ukraine, but this will not be reflected on their position regarding Georgia, [or] Moldova and Bosnia”, he said.
Last year too, all three countries were in one basket, the candidate status of all three countries was considered in one basket, but Ukraine and Moldova were given the candidate status, Georgia was not”, the party official continued.
The ruling party head added Hungary's position was that “under no circumstances” should all countries be considered for membership in a unified approach.
Pascual Ignacio Navarro Ríos, the Spanish Secretary of State for European Union Affairs, on Tuesday pledged his Government, the current Chair of the Council of the European Union, would act in line with the recommendations of the European Commission for Georgia to be granted EU membership candidate status.
Georgia’s European integration and regional security matters were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, and officials of the German Bundestag.
Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said he was confident the country would be granted the European Union membership candidate status this week in a “historic decision” by the European Council.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday said “no country” was against granting the European Union membership candidate status to Georgia, and further expressed his confidence the European Council would make the “important decision in the next few days”.
The Council of the European Union on Tuesday welcomed the overall preparation of Georgia to assume obligations of the bloc’s membership.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said the country’s citizens were expecting a “fair” decision of the European Council on the European Union membership candidate status for the state.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, on Wednesday called on his German counterparts to use the term “Russian-occupied territories” with regard to the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
Georgia's accession to the European Union, the security environment in the Black Sea region and the situation in the Russian-occupied regions of the country were discussed on Thursday in a meeting between Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, and Anna Lührmann, the German State Minister for Europe.
