Georgia’s Tato Grigalashvili wins gold at Paris Grand Slam

Georgian judoka Tato Grigalashvili claimed gold at the Paris Grand Slam on Sunday, earning the top step of the podium in the 81 kg weight category of the tournament.

Grigalashvili, a two-time European Judo Championships winner who also triumphed at last year’s World Championships, defeated his German rival Timo Cavelius with ippon in the final.

The result followed his defeat of Turkey’s Vedat Albayrak in the semifinals of the sports event, and also came after Lasha Shavdatuashvili, another Georgian wrestler, claimed gold on Sunday.

Shavdatuashvili earned the result in the 73 kg category in a repeat of his result from last year, while Luka Maisuradze added the 90 kg bronze to the Georgian team’s haul.

The combined medals have led the team to claim first place in the overall competition of the championship.
