Georgian junior kumite Uta Poniava has become the winner of the 2023 European Karate Federation Cadet, Junior, U21 Championships on Sunday in the south coast port city of Larnaca in Cyprus.
Poniava defeated his Polish opponent Dominik Dziuda in the -61 kg weight category of the championship, the Sports Ministry said.
The 18-year old Georgian kumite is the World and European champion in Shotokan karate, as well as the champion of Georgia.
Georgian judoka Lasha Shavdatuashvili claimed gold at the 2023 Paris Grand Slam in the -73 kg weight category of the tournament, repeating last year’s result, the Georgian Judo Federation said on Saturday.
Georgian Karate fighter Gogita Arkania has claimed a gold medal at the 2021 World Karate Championships, becoming the world champion for the second time. 37-year-old Arkania became the world champion for the first time in 2014.
