Irakli Chikovani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday said Georgia “has consistently proven” that it was “much more prepared” to receive the European Union membership candidate status than any other country that had already obtained the status.
In an interview with Imedi TV, Chikovani noted the country had “practically fulfilled” all EU priorities, outlined by the bloc to grant its candidate status, and highlighted “positive” evaluations from the European Commission, adding “this is what gives us cause for optimism”.
He said “unfortunately” there were forces inside and outside the country that would do everything to “hinder” the process of granting the status to Georgia.
Georgia's progress in implementing the EU recommendations will be assessed by the European Commission next week and the decision on the country’s candidacy will be announced in December.
