TAV Georgia, the company operating Tbilisi and Batumi airports in the country, on Monday announced "large-scale" infrastructural works planned for the former facility in the Georgian capital.
The company said reconstruction works worth $816,396 involved partial filling of the openings near escalators in the departure terminal to create an additional 220 square metres of space, increasing the capacity of the airport and reducing queues.
It also said the upgrade would lead to the number of passport control booths, airport security checks as well as business lounge areas being expanded, and added the works were scheduled to be completed in February.
TAV Georgia General Manager Tea Zakradze said the current departure terminal of the airport, opened in 2007, was “already quite old” and unable to serve the 4.3 million passengers the company expected to use its services next year.
She said the initiative on opening up additional space at the facility was looking to improve the terminal and create a “comfortable environment” for passengers.
