Otar Berdzenishvili, the Georgian Ambassador to Bulgaria, on Saturday said the adoption of a declaration “for the first time” by the National Assembly of Bulgaria in support of Georgia on Friday was a “historic” occasion.

He noted that the unanimously adopted declaration backed Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration, as well as granting the country the European Union membership candidate status.

Support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia was also emphasised in the declaration, adopted during Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili’s visit to Bulgaria, the Ambassador said.

In her turn, Ekaterina Zaharieva, the Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bulgarian parliament, said her country recognised the results achieved in the implementation of the EU recommendations outlined by the bloc to grant the status to Georgia.

She noted that Bulgaria continued its “consistent” support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic path and its sustainable progress on the path of European integration, stressing Georgia’s efforts in this regard were “positively evaluated”.

The authors of the declaration “express their readiness” to support Georgia on the EU path and provide appropriate assistance in the implementation of necessary reforms, Zaharieva added.

Commenting on the adoption of the declaration, the Bulgarian MP Denitsa Simeonova highlighted the importance of Georgia’s EU membership for Bulgaria, as Georgia was a “loyal partner” for her country and its membership to the European and Euro-Atlantic structure would bring “significant benefits” to increase the Black Sea region security and the stability of the South Caucasus region.

Simeonova noted Georgia’s EU integration was “especially important” amid the ongoing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, adding Georgia was “familiar” with the Russian aggression, as the country had experienced it during the 2008 conflict.

On Friday, Georgian FM called the adoption of the declaration “yet another bold demonstration of our friends’ support”.
