Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s meetings with foreign leaders as part of the European Political Community Summit in Spain this week had been followed by “supporting messages” for the country’s European Union candidacy, and contrasted the outcome with President Salome Zourabichvili’s foreign visits.

In his press comments, Papuashvili claimed the “only result” of the President’s foreign trip last month, ahead of the bloc’s forthcoming decision on Georgia’s status in December, was the Latvian President demanding Tbilisi impose sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine as a “precondition” for the country’s EU integration.

Hailing the PM’s efforts at the Summit, where the leaders of more than 20 nations were present, Papuashvili said “such positive statements after the meetings are what we need for the country’s EU integration, and not those we have heard after the President’s unauthorised visits”.

The Georgian Constitutional Court is reviewing the impeachment against the President after the process was initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party last month for her visits to Europe without the Government's approval.
