Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday lauded the importance of the European Union in his address at the reception in Tbilisi dedicated to his country’s Unity Day, and stressed the bloc was “available” to Georgia.

Praising the date commemorating the reunification of Germany in 1990 as being of “great historical significance for all of Europe”, the diplomat said the day marked the “collapse of the Iron Curtain in Europe”.

The day marks the end of the presence of Soviet troops, Russian troops on the territory of Germany and other European states. The day marks the beginning of freedom and democracy for the Germans in East Germany, and the secret, the foundation of that was the EU”, said the Ambassador.

Commending the bloc as a “foundation of our peace, stability, prosperity and freedom”, Fischer claimed the EU was now “available to Georgia”, as the country last year was granted a European perspective and had expectations to receive the bloc’s membership candidate status later this year.

This is an important day for Georgia as well. Germany stood by Georgia in 1918, 1991, 1992, and we stand by you now. Let Georgia and Germany walk together towards the European Union", he noted.

Congratulating the German people on the “remarkable day”, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who attended the occasion with his wife, highlighted the “reliable and mutually beneficial, centuries-old friendship” between the states.
