“Important” steps taken by the United Nations in sustainable development were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Garibashvili noted that his Government supported the treaties proposed by the UN Secretary General, aimed at “better” adapting the global organisation to the existing and expected challenges.

The PM stressed that the Georgian Government appreciated Guterres’s efforts in developing a "new peace agenda" based on the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter.

The discussion also focused on the current security environment and challenges in the world, the difficult security and humanitarian situation in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia, as well as the involvement of the United Nations in the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict.

The Georgian official added that the international security architecture had changed as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine and named the impact of climate change and the resulting risks an “important challenge”, and further pointed out that it was “necessary” to work with a “united effort” to overcome the existing challenges.

Garibashvili also pointed out that the reports and resolutions passed under the auspices of the UN served as “vital tools” for keeping the “severe humanitarian situation” in Georgia's Russian-occupied territories on the international agenda.

The PM once again confirmed the commitment of the Georgian Government to the policy of peaceful resolution of the conflict on the territory of the country and informed Guterres about the efforts made by his Government in this direction.

Garibashvili also extended his gratitude to the UN Secretary General for his “support and involvement” in the process of peaceful conflict resolution as well as for his “steadfast support” of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The meeting also reviewed the security environment and challenges in the South Caucasus region, with Garibashvili noting that Georgia was “always ready” to contribute to ensuring “peace and stability” in the region.
