On this day 22 years ago, 19 terrorists from the Islamist extreme group Al Qaeda hijacked four commercial aircraft and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center complex in New York City.
A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the fourth into an empty field in western Pennsylvania, due to the efforts of its passengers who had fought back.
The terrorist attack killed 3,000 people and injured more than 6,000 others.
