The United States Appropriations Act for 2023 has earmarked at least $132,025,000 in assistance for Georgia, the figures released on Tuesday show.
In addition to the assistance package, the document also points out none of the funds appropriated by the Act may be used for the benefit of Governments that have recognised the independence of, or established diplomatic relations with the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
None of the funds appropriated by this Act may be made available to support the Russian occupation of the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia”, the document specifically noted.
The Secretary of the Treasury will also instruct US executive directors in international financial institutions to vote against assistance proposals by the institutions for any programme that violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
The United States Senate Committee on Appropriations on Thursday unveiled the Consolidated Appropriations Act, the main bill of the US budget for Fiscal Year 2022, with the Georgian Foreign Ministry saying the bill contains the "most important wording" in support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.
Karen Donfried, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, on Thursday said her Government continued to stand with Georgia and would protect the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty within its internationally recognised borders.
Georgian finance minister Lasha Khutsishvili on Tuesday said the United States was Georgia’s “strategic partner”, adding the quality of cooperation between the sides and its further development was “very important”.
The 2022 national security strategy of the United States outlines the country will support “European aspirations” of Georgia and Moldova and their commitment to “important institutional reforms”.
United States President Joe Biden on Thursday signed a $1.7 trillion Government funding bill for the fiscal year 2023, with the legislation including $132,025,000 in assistance for Georgia, the White House said.
The representatives of the United States Embassy to Georgia on Friday visited the Jo Ann University Hospital in Tbilisi and handed over the gifts to the patients in the children's department, the European University said.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday commemorated an anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States and said the day was a “stark reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism on innocent lives”.
