Georgian water polo team wins third place at World University Games in China

The Georgian water polo student team on Tuesday defeated rivals from the United States 12:7 and won the third place at the 31st FISU World University Games, a multi-sport event hosted in Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan Province of China.

The Georgian students finished third in the competition with three victories, including their 16:15 win in a penalty shootout against Germany in the quarterfinals, but lost the semifinal game against Italy 10:11.

The Georgian squad, made up of members of the national water polo team, competed in Group B against hosts China, Slovakia, South Korea and the US.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on July 28 attended the opening ceremony of the Games, with the Chinese President Xi Jinping hosting officials at the Sport Park Stadium.
