Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday vowed his country’s support for Georgia’s aspiration to become a member of the European Union.
In his remarks over the matter, Fischer noted a part of the EU conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status had been implemented, while “more progress” was needed on other recommendations.
Some have been fulfilled, some are in the process of being completed, and in some cases, more progress is needed. We support Georgia’s aspiration to join the European Union, and together with Georgia, we will succeed on this path”, Fischer said.
The German Ambassador also stressed last week’s NATO Vilnius Summit had voiced “very strong and supportive” messages towards Georgia, and added the country could “count on NATO in the process that will lead Georgia to NATO membership at the given time”.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili will be in Brussels for a working visit from Tuesday to Wednesday to meet high-ranking European Union officials including Oliver Varhelyi, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement.
Kelly Degnan, the United States Ambassador to Georgia, on Thursday said the message from this week’s NATO Vilnius Summit was “very clear” that the door was “wide open” for eventual membership of Georgia and Ukraine.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday said the country’s authorities were ready to implement all conditions for receiving the European Union membership candidate status, and noted “we hope our efforts will be appreciated and soon Georgia will join the European family”.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said he hoped Georgia would receive the European Union membership candidate status later this year, and added the authorities would "have to explain to the public more details than we have done before” in the case of the bloc's decision result in it not granting the country the status.
The process of Georgia's accession to the European Union, the current agenda of the cooperation between the sides and future steps were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Oliver Varhelyi, the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement.
Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on Wednesday said the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili had assured him the country’s progress in its implementation of the priorities outlined by the bloc for granting it the membership candidate status was “well on track”.
Gert Jan Koopman, the head of the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, on Wednesday said the Commission welcomed the Georgian Government’s “keen interest” in making “further progress” on the bloc’s conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status later this year.
Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Friday said members of the European Union “must” make it “stronger”, adding Georgia “must be part of it”.
Benjamin Limbach, the Minister of Justice of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia, on Thursday highlighted the role of “open dialogue” between citizens and state institutions for the functioning of a “democratic and law-based state”, in comments during his visit to Georgia.
