Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday said Georgia, as a partner of the European Union, was “doing its best” to prevent evasion of the sanctions imposed by the bloc against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
In her comments following this week’s visit of the EU sanctions Envoy to Georgia, Botchorishvili noted the EU was “doing its best” to protect the sanctions packages it had adopted so far against Russia and ensure its implementation.
[T]he EU is working as hard as possible to protect the sanctions packages it has adopted so far and ensure their implementation. This was about the 11th package of the EU sanctions. The scope of the implementation of this package includes the cooperation of the European Union with third countries”, Botchorishvili said.
“We are a partner of the European Union [and] we have a declared policy [that] even though we do not impose sanctions on Russia, we do everything to prevent evasion of EU sanctions through Georgia”, the Parliament official continued.
She also stressed the desire of the Georgian authorities to “work with our partners” and hear their plans on “how they are going to ensure that there is no evasion of sanctions”.
Sanctions are [also] evaded in EU countries. This is the problem, this is why the European Union is working [on the topic], and we are their partner”, Botchorishvili concluded.
