Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Guram Guramishvili on Wednesday discussed the 2024-2025 action plan for national road safety with representatives of public agencies and related non-governmental organisations, the Ministry of Economy announced.
The meeting was held as part of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe project Sustainable Mobility and Smart Connectivity in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Western Balkans.
The participants aimed to discuss topics including improving efficiency of road safety management and behaviour of road traffic participants and ensuring safe road infrastructure, with the goal of reducing the number of deaths caused by road accidents by 25 percent.
In recent years, the number of cars has increased greatly, and the number of [domestically] registered vehicles has already reached 1,650 million. This trend requires additional measures in terms of road traffic safety, [which is] one of the priorities of the Georgian Government”, Guramishvili said.
He added the Government had approved the national strategy for road safety in 2016 for the years covering 2016-2020, and credited the strategy with a 28 percent reduction in road accident deaths.
