The Georgian Interior Ministry on Saturday said it was investigating a clash between students of Tbilisi State University that took place during a lecture led by the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party on Saturday, as well as a subsequent incident at a hospital in Tbilisi.

The body said it was studying the incident, following which TSU student Luka Shvelidze was taken to the Khechinashvili Hospital with injuries.

Taking place during a class led by Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of Georgian Dream who is also a lecturer at the University, the clash was reported after some of the students protested the lecture.

The Ministry said law enforcement were also investigating an incident at the Hospital following the clash at TSU, in which Shvelidze said an armed individual in plainclothes had entered his hospital room and threatened him with arrest.

In its comments, the Ministry said Shvelidze had alleged the individual had "not formally introduced himself as a police officer and had been under the influence of alcohol".
