Russia's invasion of Ukraine undermines “modern values and fundamental principles” of the rules-based international order, with Georgia “firmly standing” with “friendly nation” Ukraine and the “free world”, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Wednesday at a reception dedicated to the selection of Georgia as the focus country for this year’s Europalia arts festival.

Speaking in Brussels at the event marking the selection for the event, which will run in the autumn, the head of the Georgian Government said the “free world”  faced “serious global challenges” on the backdrop of the Russian invasion last year, adding his own country had “very often” experienced “Russian aggression” over the past thirty years.

As you know, we had a full-scale war with Russia 15 years ago. Our country has suffered huge human losses, and 20 percent of our territory is still occupied by Russian troops”, Garibashvili told the audience at the occasion.

He also emphasised the “strong belief of Georgian people” that achieving the “goal of many generations” in seeing the country “take a rightful place in the family of European democratic nations” was not only in the interest of Georgia, but would also make the “European family stronger and even more united”.
