Georgia celebrates World Food Safety Day with various activities

Georgia is celebrating World Food Safety Day on Wednesday with various activities organised by the country’s National Food Agency and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The exhibition and sale of Georgian agricultural products have been arranged in Tbilisi's Rike Park for the guests of the event, who also got acquainted with the technical equipment of the National Food Agency, the Agency said.

Fun and educational activities were also held for both adults and children, with the involvement of the Environmental Information and Education Center and with the support of the Czech Development Agency.

Kakha Kakabadze, the Deputy Environment and Agriculture Minister addressed the guests and said the celebration of World Food Safety Day aimed to raise public awareness, highlighting this year’s theme “Food Standards Save Lives”.

He noted the state’s approach to food safety was comprehensive with the involvement of state agencies, producers and consumers, emphasising that the systematic approach and standardisation were the “starting point” of the state’s policy for the protection of consumer interests and health.

Raimund Jehle, FAO Representative in Georgia, said the improvement and continuous development of food safety standards were one of the priorities of the organisation,  emphasising the FAO’s ten-year strategic plan, which includes “better production, better nutrition, better environment and better lives”.

The event was also attended by Nino Tsilosani, the Chair of the Agrarian Issues Committee of the Parliament, Silviu Domente, the representative of the World Health Organisation in Georgia, as well as representatives of the European Union delegation.

World Food Safety Day has been celebrated since 2019 annually on June 7 by the initiative of the FAO and the WHO.
