Tbilisi’s Dedaena Park to host FAO, EU-supported agrarian market

Tbilisi residents and visitors will be invited to taste Georgian cheese, meat products, honey wine, tea and other products by local producers at the Unique Georgian Taste agrarian market hosted in capital Tbilisi’s Dedaena Park this weekend.
Set to run with the backing of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation through European Union support, the event will present nearly 50 producers from across regions of the country and exhibit their local niche and terroir products, the FAO said.
The organisation also noted it had trained all participants on food safety and business management by, with some also receiving financial assistance for equipment or improved premises through the support of the EU.
The event is being supported by the EU under the EU4Business initiative entitled EU Innovative Action for Private Sector Competitiveness in Georgia, along with other sponsors. The initiative aims to assist Georgian entrepreneurs in improving the legal environment and access to finance, while strengthening ties with the EU.
Over 700 Georgian farmers participated in training programmes last year organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with the support of the European Union (EU), under the ENPARD programme.
Since 1992, Elselema has been producing all types of clothing, with a particular focus on uniforms, outdoor wear, as well as casuals and knitted products for men, women and children. It’s a family business which has grown to operate two factories – both employing up to 200 workers – one in Tbilisi, and one in Lanchkhuti to the West of the Georgian capital.
EU-Georgia collaborate to boost local businesses
The European Union (EU) is offering a technical and financial assistance package worth more than €62 million within the EU4Business Week to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to better access the EU market.
Most businesses in Georgia are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), accounting for 94% of businesses and 43% of all jobs. Yet they contribute only 18% to the country’s GDP.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation on Saturday held a “multi-stakeholder” event marking the closing of the European Union-financed €12 million project under the ENPARD III programme and showcased the achieved results to the participants in Tbilisi, the FAO said.
Georgian Minister of Environmental Protection Otar Shamugia and Raimund Jehle of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations on Thursday signed a new project to support the low-emission and climate resilient development of the country’s agriculture sector.
Georgia is celebrating World Food Safety Day on Wednesday with various activities organised by the country’s National Food Agency and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.
The European Union, its member states and financial institutions will implement two major initiatives in Georgia, with one focusing on creating new opportunities for people living in regions, and the other aiming to protect the country’s nature, improve waste management services and make municipalities greener.
