Georgian agriculture minister Otar Shamugia on Tuesday reviewed the current food security situation and challenges in Georgia at the 50th session of the committee on world food security, with the event hosted in Rome.
The session, attended by ministers and high-ranking delegates from around 130 countries, focused on the coordination of global food security policy and the current situation in food security and nutritional value, the ministry said.
In his address, Shamugia discussed the current situation and challenges in the country and noted “all state projects and programmes” in agriculture were aiming at creating “as many quality Georgian products as possible” and increasing the dynamics of production.
“We are working to sell our products on both local and international markets. The government provides cheap financial resources to farmers and entrepreneurs, agricultural equipment, and new technologies are available to them. The government is diversifying markets. We support farmers and agricultural businesses in all components of the agricultural value chain”, Shamugia said.
The minister also noted the country was “actively involved” in the process of conducting national dialogues on food systems organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, with a corresponding report prepared and submitted to the UN.
Shamugia also thanked the FAO for supporting the development of Georgia’s agricultural sector.
