Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday announced his Government would purchase 154 new buses to serve passengers in cities and towns beyond capital Tbilisi, spending ₾53 million ($20.31mln) for the purpose.

The Government Administration cited Garibashvili as saying the Euro 5-standard fleet was part of a move to update public transportation not just in Tbilisi but other parts of the country.

He also noted infrastructural updates aimed to come as part of the move.

Today, bus stations in the capital, cities or regions cannot withstand any criticism. This requires introduction of special standards [...] It is necessary that the transportation [...] [and] travel be comfortable and safe”, the PM said.

Last week Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili announced modern bus stations would be built across Georgia as part of the reform aiming to provide passengers with a better experience by May 2025.
