Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday said his country “deserved” the European Union membership candidate status and noted the outcome was “the only right decision that the European partners need to make”.

In his remarks ahead of the European Political Community Summit in Moldova’s capital city of Chișinău, Garibashvili noted Georgia was “ready” to receive the candidate status.

“The main topic [of the Summit] will be the [ongoing] war in Ukraine and security issues on the European continent and in the whole world in general. Of course, I will also talk about our challenges, the challenges of our country, our security”, Garibashvili said.

Of course, it is our great wish and great dream that de-occupation takes place peacefully in our country, [that] our country is united. Our Government is doing everything in this direction to achieve this great goal as soon as possible”, the PM pointed out in his media comments.

“Also, naturally, we will talk about the European perspective of our country. I will state our stance that Georgia is ready to receive the candidate status. Of course, our country deserves the status. This is the only right decision that our European partners need to make”, the Georgian official noted.

The Government head also reiterated his support and solidarity for Ukraine.

Of course, we express our solidarity with our friend Ukraine, the Ukrainian people. We all wish that this war will end soon, that [Ukraine’s] territorial integrity will be restored, and that peace will prevail in Ukraine and the whole world”, he added.
