Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Miroslav Wlachovsky, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia, on Monday discussed bilateral ties and Tbilisi’s European integration prospects on the sidelines of the Global Security Forum in Bratislava.

In the meeting, the officials hailed the “friendly relations and close partnership” between their states, and discussed ways to further strengthen the existing cooperation, the Georgian foreign office said.

The discussion largely focused on Georgia’s European integration process ahead of the European Union’s forthcoming decision by the end of this year whether to grant Georgia its membership candidate status, the foreign office added. The Georgian FM said he hoped Slovakia would support granting the status to his county.

Reviewing security challenges in the South Caucasus and the wider world on the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Georgian official expressed his gratitude to the Slovak Government for its “firm support” for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Global Security Forum is running in the capital city of Slovakia between Monday and Wednesday, with the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili scheduled to take part in a thematic discussion as part of the event.
