The United States Agency for International Development will work with the Georgian municipalities of Kutaisi, Tkibuli, Mestia and Lentekhi by supporting improvements to the quality of life and empowerment for local communities, the Agency said on Wednesday.

USAID’s Local Governance Programme office signed memoranda with the four municipalities to kick off the cooperation, with the Agency set to encourage elevated local government performance in the localities.

The collaboration will also target designated systems and services in each municipality and result in advancements in municipal social services, solid waste management, municipal transportation, preschool education and other areas prioritised by local communities, the release by the organisation said.

USAID said the municipalities were selected following a multi-stage selection process where they demonstrated an “immense amount of enthusiasm and commitment” to work on boosting municipal accountability and efficiency, enhancing delivery of public services and promoting citizen engagement in local decision-making processes.

USAID has held co-creation workshops with its representatives to determine the issues and top requirements of each partner municipality and create their individual action plans, the release added.

The USAID Local Governance Programme is a five-year, $21 million project that unites members of the central and local governments to collaborate with the private sector and civil society to fulfil the objectives of the decentralisation agenda of the Georgian Government.

USAID plans to support at least 22 local governments and civic organisations while also including others in outreach, learning, and exchange activities as part of the effort.
