Orthodox Christians in Georgia and around the world are commemorating the Good Friday holiday today, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Regarded as the most challenging day of Lent, the annual holiday sees the most devout Orthodox followers either go through their day without food, or only have bread and water in commemoration.

Customs for Georgian believers include dying eggs red - in an act symbolising the blood of Christ, rebirth and new life - while paska, a traditional Easter sweet bread is also baked.

Religious followers in Georgia will celebrate Easter proper on Sunday.
