Orthodox Christians around the globe and in Georgia are today commemorating one of the most significant days in the religious calendar – Good Friday – which marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

On this day Georgian believers dye eggs red, symbolising the blood of Christ, rebirth and new life. A traditional sweet Easter bread, paska, is also traditionally baked today.

Good Friday is regarded as the most challenging day of Lent. In accordance with their confessor’s instructions, the most devout Orthodox Christians eat nothing all day or only receive bread and water.

Annually Good Friday is a public holiday in Georgia. Georgian Orthodox Christians believe no hard work should be done on Good Friday as the day is fully devoted to the Lord.
