Interpretive trail opens in eastern Georgia’s Lagodekhi Protected Area

Visitors of the Lagodekhi Protected Area in the eastern Georgian region of Kakheti can learn about its biodiversity, ecosystems, flora and fauna while following a newly opened interpretive trail through the recreational area.

The Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia on Friday announced the kilometre-long new trail, which takes about 40-60 minutes to traverse and was created for introducing the educational information to preschoolers and school students.

Georgia’s Deputy Environment Minister Iuri Nozadze said it was “important” to promote the development of ecotourism in the country along with ensuring preservation of the environment and biodiversity.

Such projects will help raise awareness among young people about how to protect nature and how to take care of the forest. Also, it is of no less importance that the local population will receive economic benefits [through tourist attraction]”, he said.

The interpretive trail was set up as part of the New Life for Lagodekhi Trails project, with the support of British Petroleum Georgia, the United States Agency for International Development and Care Caucasus.
