Parliament official, US Defence Attaché discuss strategic partnership

The strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States in defence and security and the importance of strengthening it were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Irakli Beraia, the Chair of the Defence and Security Committee in the Georgian Parliament, and Joseph Bilbo, the US Defence Attaché in Georgia.
In his remarks following the meeting, Beraia highlighted the “special importance” of the ties.
The Georgian-American strategic partnership is of special importance for the protection of the common values of the two countries, for the deepening of national interests, as well as for strengthening the security of the region and the Euro-Atlantic space as a whole”, the Parliament official said.
“The US firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, the integration of our country into NATO and the European Union, and the strengthening of its defence capabilities. A further strengthening of the strategic partnership between the two countries is in our common interests”, he added.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and Jake Sullivan, the United States President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor, held a meeting on Friday during Zourabichvili’s visit to Washington.
The importance of the existing strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States and strengthening their cooperation in “various fields” were discussed on Thursday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Louis Bono, the US Senior Advisor for Caucasus Negotiations.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday told Irene Fellin, the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, the country was acting as an ally for the bloc “in many ways”.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, on Thursday said the “only path” of ensuring Georgia's sovereignty and independence ran through the country’s membership in the European Union and NATO.
The United States European Command on Sunday congratulated Georgia on Defence Forces Day.
Regional security matters, the ongoing war in Ukraine and its consequences for Georgia, and the situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between Irakli Beraia, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament's Defence and Security Committee, and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the Chair of the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag.
The United States Department of State's 2021 Country Report on Terrorism on Tuesday said Georgia had continued its “robust engagement” on counterterrorism issues throughout that year and remained a “strong” security partner for the United States.
