Kakha Bekauri, the Chairman of the Georgian National Communications Commission, on Wednesday said 500,000 residents of 1,000 villages in Georgia would have an opportunity to access broadband and high-quality internet.

While presenting the Commission’s 2021 report to the Parliament, Bekauri highlighted the Log in Georgia project, aiming to increase high-speed internet access across the country, having been implemented by the state body’s support, together with the Open Net company, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank.

According to Bekauri, in 2021, within the framework of the second component of the "Digital Support Program" project, ComCom conducted a study on digital needs in Ozurgeti district and based on the results, training of the population of Ozurgeti Municipality began. As a consequence of the training program, 500 thousand people will be able to develop digital skills and use various electronic services provided by the state, ComCom’s Chairman noted.

The Open Net has built a 140 km broadband internet infrastructure in Ozurgeti, the Chairman emphasised, adding the residents would be able to access internet with the speed of 100 megabytes per second, and as for public and private organisations, they would access 1 gigabit per second.

The number of internet users in 2021, compared to previous years, increased by 65 percent,  including mobile internet users with about 3.75 million subscribers, as well as broadband internet users, which increased by 4.3 percent in 2021, the Chairman pointed out.

He also stressed that fixed wireless internet was available in 2351 villages out of 3385 in Georgia.
