The Georgian Government is taking steps to ensure “full integration” of citizens with the Down syndrome in the society, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Monday to mark World Down Syndrome Day.

In a social media post, Garibashvili said the Government’s policies involved initiatives in health, education, social and employment areas to create conditions for self-realisation of those with the syndrome.

We [...] are building an equal human society, where everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in the educational, creative, sports, business or public spheres, [...] has the opportunity to work and live a dignified life for the good of our country, [and were] it is not the number of chromosomes that matters, but the care we take for each other,” the Government head posted.

Garibashvili said the Government would continue to “actively work” for integration of those with the Down syndrome in public life..

World Down Syndrome Day has been marked internationally on March 21 since 2006. The date was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes the syndrome.
