Independent media committed to its values and principles is “essential” for democracy and civil society development, Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili said on Monday on the annual Day of Georgian Journalism.

Extending his congratulations on the date to reporters from TV channels, radio outlets, print media and digital platforms, Garibashvili underlined the significance of media with “high responsibilities and professional standards”.

Our Government guarantees a free and pluralistic media environment. According to the researches of authoritative international organisations, the degree of media freedom has significantly improved as a result of reforms carried out since Georgian Dream [party] came to power,” the Government head said.

We will [continue to] do everything in the future for the development of the Georgian media space,” the PM added in his statement marking the date, while also calling Georgia “the undisputed leader in the region”.
