Georgia’s hosting of next year’s World Ski Championship, and preparation of the country’s winter resort infrastructure for the event, was discussed by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Michel Vion, the Secretary General of the International Ski Federation, on Friday.

The two officials reviewed the new snowmaking system, ski trails and ropeways, and equipment worth over 1.4 million GEL ($425,000/€387,000) installed and set up at the Bakuriani resort to host the tournament, the Georgian Government said.

Further plans for artificial lakes, a snowmaking system, ski trails and buildings for ensuring “the highest level” of the competition were also discussed by the sides at the meeting. Garibashvili said the development of ski and winter resorts, and the preparation of Georgian athletes for world-class competitions, were “of utmost importance” for his team.

The total cost of the project to host the World Ski Championship in Bakuriani is 240 million GEL ($72,000,000/€66,000,000). The event will make Georgia one of only 14 countries where the competition has been held.

Bakuriani hosted a Parallel Giant Slalom European Cup stage during the 2021-2022 Winter season as a precursor for the big championship next year, with participants of the international contest noting the “highest standards” of organisation of the event.
