The National Archives of Georgia published a photo of the first Christmas tree decorated for the New Year in the country’s capital Tbilisi house, dating back to 1913.

The Christmas tree was placed in the house on Geronti Kikodze Street, formerly known as Paskevich Street. The owner of the flat is unknown but the initials on the picture, which belongs to Giglo Karalashvili’s photo collection, read ‘V.M.T’, the National Archives said.

Celebratory gunfire used to be extremely popular in Tbilisi on New Year’s Eve. Hence, the police would have plenty to do - everyone had a chance to shoot at least once, but some would keep shooting until dawn. [...] As soon as the first shots were fired, celebration of the advent of New Year would commence”, the Georgian media platform Atinati’s article said on the traditions of celebrating New Year in Georgia.
