The National Bank of Georgia has issued silver and gold collector coins dedicated to Vakhtang Gorgasali, a 5th century CE King of Georgia, in the latest release in its series of history-themed coins.
Issued in mints equal to ₾5 nominals, the coins were produced by the Royal Dutch Mint, with the main composition on the obverse of the gold coin featuring an image of the monarch, reproduced from a painting by Georgian artist Giorgi Gegechkori.
On the reverse is an illustration of Metekhi - a historical Old Town district of Tbilisi - as well as an image of a shield and a wolf’s head on a helmet, a representation of the symbolic name “Wolf Head”, given to the King by Persians in their language.
The price for gold coins is ₾1,380 ($517), with the coins set to be sold both at designated physical stores and through pre-orders using the online store of the NBG. While the gold version will go on sale shortly, the date of the start of sale for silver coins will be published on the official Bank website next month.
