Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Monday expressed his hope that all of the conditions set by the European Union for granting Georgia the membership candidate status would be met to bring the country “closer” to the bloc, in remarks over the Eastern Partnership foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

Haavisto noted the Eastern Partnership platform of the EU was “extremely important”, adding it was “very good” to meet foreign ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

We will discuss with the Georgian Foreign Minister the steps to be taken in the country as well as the current events in Georgia. We look forward to all the requirements being met to bring the country closer to the EU”, the top Finnish diplomat said.

Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili will feature in the ministerial meeting on Monday, with the event bringing together EU foreign ministers and their counterparts from the EaP.
