Tourism sector to receive $73 mln for developing new, existing locations

The government of Georgia will launch a programme for developing new tourism locations while upgrading the existing destinations in the country, allocating ₾200 million ($73.40mln) for the purpose, prime minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Monday.

In his remarks at the weekly government meeting, Garibashvili noted tourism was one of “important contributors” to the growth of the domestic economy and among “priority directions” for the government. 

He revealed his team had started working on the establishment of new tourist locations and  a specific plan would be made public soon. The government administration also cited the PM as saying the programme would involve both existing tourist sites and new locations.

In addition, ₾170 million ($62.39mln) will be allocated to infrastructure projects in the capital city of Tbilisi.

The government also plans to spend ₾70 million ($25.69mln) on bringing “world-class stars, performers and artists” to the country over the next two years in a bid to promote the visitor destinations internationally.
