Positive economic trends in Georgia and future prospects were discussed on Saturday in a meeting of the Government's Economic Council led by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the Government Administration said.
The Council reviewed the plans for the development of new resort zones, which the Economy Ministry has been “actively” working on under the instructions of the Prime Minister. The importance of the Georgian resorts’ development, including “particularly'' essential balneological resorts, for increasing the volume of international visitors that would be beneficial for the economic progress of the country, was also highlighted at the meeting.
It was pointed out that ₾200 million (about $74 mln) would be allocated from the budget for the development of the infrastructure of new tourist places. The Government has been working on the projects of complete rehabilitation and reconstruction of ten new resort towns, which will be implemented in several directions and include both the development of tourist attractive places and the creation of investment offers for businesses, creating additional jobs.
The discussion also touched on the process of developing spatial planning of the country, noting that the Government has been “actively” working on the technical requirements specification, and in the “near future” a consortium would be selected by competition, to be composed of local and leading foreign companies, to work out a plan development concept within one year.
