Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday said Georgia was ready to continue acting as a mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan to ensure the South Caucasus region became an “example of peace”.

Papuashvili said he hoped authorities of the countries of the region would “show our younger generations that even in the face of the most difficult problems, the people of the South Caucasus can build a peaceful future with wisdom and mutual cooperation”.

In a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Alen Simonyan, who is on an official visit to Georgia, the Georgian official noted the visit of the Armenian parliamentary delegation was “particularly important” as this year marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

For 30 years, the ties and friendship between our countries have deepened, bringing many beneficial results for both our countries and citizens, as well as for the region as a whole. I hope that during these decades we have created a solid foundation on which our future generations will be able to live in neighbourly and fraternal coexistence”, Papuashvili said.

The officials also reviewed “further strengthening” of inter-legislative ties, including between friendship groups and sectoral committees of the two parliaments.
